TEFL Courses in Florence and Rome

Florence

Firenze, the capital of Tuscany, has a population of around half a million inhabitants and stands on the banks of the river Arno. It is located in the heart of Tuscany, in some of the most beautiful countryside famous for it's wine and rustic cuisine. It is a city that bustles with industry and craft, commerce and culture, art and science. Florence is also a perfect base from which to explore the surrounding towns and hilly countryside, with wonders such as Sienna and Assisi nearby. In the city itself, the easy accessibility of the sights for the pedestrian combines with a temperate year-round climate to make Florence an ideal destination in Europe.

The TEFL facility is located at Piazzale Porta al Prato 14, in the zone known as San Jacopino, a short ten minute walk from both the central train station, Firenze Santa Maria Novella, and the Fortezza da Basso, a former fortress. Nearby there are some of the various schools that comprise the University of Florence, the new courthouse, a cinema, and many stores and restaurants. This is a real Italian area where students will meet, eat lunch with, and socialize with Italians who actually live and carry out their daily lives in the actual zone of the school. As a result, they will be exposed to the authentic Florence, not the Florence that is created for tourists. This is one of our goals for our students; we want them to interact with and be exposed to the real, authentic Tuscan lifestyle. Since students may or may not be teaching in a big city where English is present, we want to prepare them not only to teach, but to succeed and flourish in their new Italian lives. Our English students enjoy coming to English classes here each day and many times hang around for a chat with teacher trainees or go for a coffee together after the lessons.

A private room in an apartment with other students from the TEFL course or local schools. Some apartments are also rented by Italian students who attend the Universita’ degli Studi di Firenze who are happy to share their apartment with a visiting TEFL student. You will have your own room, so you’ll have your privacy, but at the same time you’ll be able to enjoy a “real” Florentine student’s life.

A shared room is also a popular option—especially if you are coming to take the course with a friend or spouse. You will have a single bed in a shared room in the city. All apartments are furnished, and conveniently located in the city. This is also a good way to get to know another student in the area. TEFL students will most likely be rooming together in this option, so you’ll have someone with whom to discuss your lesson planning ideas or just go and explore the city.

The home stay option is for those who really want to experience the Italian lifestyle! While you will usually be very busy preparing lessons and teaching, you will have the chance to go home and eat an authentic Italian dinner nightly with your host family. If you have some knowledge of Italian or are interested in learning, this is a great opportunity.

Roma, the Eternal city founded by Romulus and Remus. The epicenter of an empire, which stretched to the boundaries of the ancient civilized world. Traditions in Roman law, art and architecture still influence western civilization today.

“La Dolce Vita” (the good life) is what Romans live every day. An example can be seen in the produce markets and neighborhood grocery stores selling fresh vegetables, meats and fish. These ingredients contribute to one of the world’s great culinary traditions. The pungent smell of a hundred different cheeses and sandwich meats intermingled with the aroma of freshly baked bread would drive even a Spartan cra

Rome

Rome is a city of vivid and unforgettable images: the view of the city’s silhouette from “Janiculum Hill” at dawn; the array of broken marble columns and ruins of temple of the Roman forum; St. Peter’s dome emerging from a pink-and-red sunset, capping a gloriously decorated basilica.

Another Rome comes alive at night, cafes and restaurants grow more animated, especially if you are in “Trastevere”, and after dinner it is possible to stroll by the fountains or through “Piazza Navona”, having a wonderful gelato or an espresso.  During the summer months the whole city turns into one big open theatre with shows, live concerts, open-air cinemas, etc., the magical ESTATE ROMANA (Roman Summer).

Teaching Internships in Tuscany:

Open the door to employment in Italy!  Gain consistent, live teaching experiences following your training.  If you qualify, you will be placed into a teaching internship in an Italian school, pre-school, adult education facility, or learning center.  These internships generally run for two months and you'll have a tutor to guide you as you require assistance.  Past participants have gained valuable insight into the culture of their placement schools and many have then been offered employment directly with the school.  It's a win-win situation to take part in an internship:  You won't have to commit to a full-time contract until you've had the chance to experience the environment first hand, and you'll be sure to be on the same page as the school when discussing requirements of your position.

To qualify, you must:

  • possess a teaching certificate (TEFL, TESOL, TESL, CELTA, CLAD)
  • have a desire to work with and understand different cultures
  • be open to your placement schools' philosophies
  • want to add value to your CV by taking part in an international teaching internship
